DMT, MK-ULTRA, Number Stations, Oh My! - A Genuinely Chilling Conspiracy Horror
The Quick and Dirty
Banshee Chapter (2013) marks the directorial debut of Blair Erickson, and I was quite impressed. The film's description reads: "Journalist Anne Roland explores the disturbing links behind her friend's sudden disappearance, an ominous government research chemical, and a disturbing radio broadcast of unknown origin."
My Thoughts
Every now and then, a horror movie comes along that reminds you the genre still has life left in it. Banshee Chapter is one such film. It is an exceptionally effective horror movie that managed to send an actual chill up my spine—a sensation I haven't experienced from modern horror in many years.
This film offers a bit of everything. The cinematography is a hybrid of traditional camerawork and found footage, striking a balance that should appeal to fans of the found footage genre without alienating those who dislike it. The story and pacing were engaging enough to hold my attention throughout, and the film excelled at building tension.
Banshee Chapter features several jump scares, but it handles them better than most modern horror films. They feel organic and are not forced just to make the viewer jump. Overall, this film is a refreshing reminder that the horror genre is still capable of delivering genuine thrills.
